Jim Tuohy was born In Bronx, New York. He joined the Marine Corps in 1965 and entered Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC. Upon completion of Boot Camp and advanced infantry training, he joined the 1st Bn 26th Marines at Camp Pendleton. The Battalion deployed to Vietnam in July 1966. In September 1966, he was wounded in action while engaged in action against enemy forces. Upon his return to the United States in 1967, he was assigned to the US Naval Disciplinary Command in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where he served as a corrections NCO until his discharge in December 1968.
In March 1970 he joined the Yankee Detachment in the Bronx and remained a member there until 1977 when he transferred to New Jersey. There he joined the newly formed Gooney Bird Detachment. In 1980 he transferred to Flint, Mi and joined the Flint Detachment where he went on to serve in virtually every detachment and department office. He was elected Department Commandant in 1988 and served until 1990.
He was elected as the National Vice Commandant of the Central Division in 2001 and served in that position until 2005 when he was elected to the office of National Judge Advocate and served until 2008 He attained the offices of National Jr. Vice Commandant and National Sr. Vice Commandant consecutively for the next four years. Jim was elected as National Commandant in August 2012 in Mobile, Alabama.
Jim retired from General Motors Corporation and EDS in 1999. He served as a Veterans Service Officer and the State Director of Michigan for the Marine Corps League from 2000 – 2010.
Jim is married to MCLA National President Gerri Tuohy since April 1969. They have five daughters and twelve grandchildren and reside in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
The Marine Corps League was established in June 1923, during a reunion in New York, of Marines who had served in the 1st World War. The League was chartered by an act of the United States Congress on August 4th, 1937.
The League was authorized to assist and aid in presenting claims before the Veterans Administration by Public Law # 243, passed by the 74th Congress of the United States of America.
